Natron Energy has announced the construction of the first sodium-ion battery gigafactory in the US, located in North Carolina. The California-based company plans to produce 24 gigawatts (GW) of sodium-ion batteries annually at full capacity in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. This new factory will support over 1,000 jobs and represents a significant investment for the company.

The factory, situated at the 437-acre Kingsboro megasite, will enable Natron to scale up its production capacity by 40 times, compared to its current facility in Michigan. The project, partially funded by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, is expected to boost the state's economy significantly over the next 12 years.

Despite the future potential of sodium-ion batteries, there is still no specific timeline available for the groundbreaking, completion, or full operation of the factory. Natron's batteries are known for their high power density, extended cycle life, and unique safety features, positioning them as a promising technology for various applications, including data centers, microgrids, telecoms, and electric vehicle fast charging.
