The Port of San Diego recently acquired two 400-tonne electric Konecranes, boasting the highest lifting capacity on the West Coast. This significant upgrade from the previous 100-tonne diesel cranes was made possible by a $14 million investment in all-electric Gottwald Generation 6 mobile harbor cranes from Konecranes, along with $8.9 million in electrical infrastructure improvements supported by grants from the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District (SDAPCD). These modernization efforts align with the Port's commitment to decarbonization and reducing air pollution.

Chairman Rafael Castellanos of the Board of Harbour Commissioners of the Port of San Diego highlighted the positive impact of these all-electric cranes on public health, the environment, and the regional economy. By replacing diesel-powered equipment with electric alternatives, such as these cranes, the Port continues its efforts to improve air quality, minimize environmental impact, and support commerce and job growth in the region.

The arrival of these cranes at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal (TAMT) signifies a milestone in the Port's operations. Expected to be operational later this year, TAMT serves as a vital cargo terminal for breakbulk, bulk, and container cargo, covering a 38.85-hectare facility. The transition to electric cranes marks a significant step towards sustainable and efficient port operations.
